LIVE Concert

Friday, 29th April 2011, 7:30pm at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort

Kareyce Fotso (singer) and Aly Keita (balafon player)

Kareyce Fotsoalt src=http://www.alliance-francaise-antilles.org/images/stories/StKittsAndNevis/sk.jpg was born in the Bamileke region, West Cameroon and raised amongst the Beti. After successful studies in bio-chemistry and audiovisuals, she decides to pursue her passion for singing. It begins in the cabarets of Yaounde where she became a chorister and back-up vocalist. She attracted the attention of  the group : Korongo Jam Erik Aliana by her stage presence and her extraordinary voice.

In France, following her resident status, ”Visa pour la creation musiques ” in 2009 , she worked under the artistic direction of Francis Kokelaere, who among other things, directed the Ensemble National des Percussions de Guinea and influenced the progress of the Guinean group Wofa to perform worldwide.
This encounter propelled her  entire career. She was awarded ”Prix de la Francophonie” in 2009. Kareyce was equally finalist of ”RFI Prix de Decouvertes ” in 2010 alongside Koppo.

Aly Keïta,alt src=http://www.alliance-francaise-antilles.org/images/stories/StKittsAndNevis/sk1.jpg the Ivory Coast balafon player was born in 1969 in Abidjan. From an early age, he was initiated in the playing of this musical ancestor of the xylophone and the marimba, by his father, himself a balafon player.

In other words, in the Keïta family the balafon is a serious matter.

Aly’s balafon is first and foremost a work of art. In some ways, Aly is the “king” of musical tuning: he has customized his string and wood instrument by adding different sized calabash resonators, making it sound like no other balafon on earth.

In his compositions, Aly speaks about everyday life, orphans and mothers, and men’s shame... The musical translation is that of a virtuoso of mallets. Aly becomes part of his instrument, caressing it with tenderness, striking it with force and at great speed. He is a magician, a sorcerer who expresses the joy of life through his art.
