Names of places in Grenada : a cultural heritage

Grenada was under French control from 1650 to 1779 and from 1763 to 1783. That is to say 117 years in all.

Beyond the few buildings which bear witness of this period and the ruins that one can explore in the country, creole was spoken for a long time in Grenada. Today, this language, that we call 'patois', has so to speak disappeared. One can miss it.

Worried about preserving the cultural heritage, the Alliance Française has in the past attempted to organise patois classes - without any big success, it is true.

At the start of the school year, every year, several form 1 students (kids of about 11/12 years old) call the Alliance and ask us the meanings of names like « La Sagesse », « Sauteurs » or « Morne Jaloux ». It is about the names of places in the country of which the origin goes back to these periods of French occupation, and the students in question are in the process of beginning their study of the French Language.

In liaison with the Department of Culture in the Ministry of Tourism, we have picked out from recent and old maps all the names of places which sound French. In the following table, we propose some translations or explicative elements of these in English.

This work has been the object of three live programmes of two hours each on GBN (Grenada Broadcasting Network), during which numerous listeners intervened. The objective of making this document available online  is to make it accessible to all persons interested in the History of Grenada and its cultural heritage, including and before all, to the students and teachers of the country.

The French Teachers Association of Grenada

This association, which comprises of about thirty members, brings together the French teachers of the country. It is open to teachers of both primary and secondary levels.

Roger Williams, its president, defines its objectives in the following manner: " it is about maintaining the interest and the motivation of French teachers, who in turn will transfer their passion to their students".

The Alliance française supports the Association (APFLEG) by offering its logistic, office and teaching facilities. We also maintain a link with the Cultural Department of the French Embassy.
